Embedded Foreign Bodies
A common injury is a hot iron metallic foreign body embedded in the cornea. Grinding or drilling in iron or other metals will release particles that are hot, and when they hit the eye, they embed themselves in the cornea. The metal can begin to rust and leave a rust deposit. We have experience in removing these foreign bodies and rust spots. With proper medical treatment, these injuries will resolve well.
Retinal Trauma
People know how a black eye can damage the skin on the face. However, such contusions can also affect your eyes. There is a blood vessel layer under the retina. This is very delicate and sensitive tissue. With a contusion, there can be damage to these vessels, which can affect your overall eye health.
Retinal Hemorrhages
A compression injury can knock the retina loose and cause bleeding underneath. This can result in retinal hemorrhage or detachment. Both can result in blindness. Immediate examination and subsequent treatment are needed in these injuries.
Know When to Seek Emergency Help
If you experience unusual flashes of light in your vision, this could mean that there is something happening in the back of the eye. The eye does not have any pain sensors, so flashes are your best clue that there is something wrong.
In contrast, the cornea has more nerve pain sensors than any other part of the body. Injury to the cornea can be incredibly painful. However, in both cases, immediate treatment is needed. Call now for 24/7 emergency support.
At Centennial Eye & Cosmetics Associates, we provide diagnosis, treatment, and management of diseases that affect the human eye and visual system.
Dry Eye Syndrome
Dry Eye Syndrome occurs when the normal flow of tears over the eyes is interrupted, or the tear film is abnormal. In many cases, dry eye syndrome is a lifelong problem. You can relieve the symptoms, but there's no cure. We have several treatment methods to increase tear quality and flow, making the surface of the eye much healthier.
Glaucoma
Glaucoma occurs when the pressure inside the eye increases and damages the sensitive retinal nerves that line the back of the eye. There are many tests that we provide to evaluate the possibility of glaucoma. We'll look at the color of your optic nerve head and the nerve fiber thickness around the optic nerve. Threshold field tests are also very important. Medications and surgery can treat glaucoma.
Diabetic Retinopathy
Diabetic retinopathy is a condition where sugar levels damage your blood vessels. The blood vessels begin to leak fluid or bleed, resulting in hemorrhages and swelling. The condition can also cause the formation of yellow deposits known as exudates. Both of these things can lead to vision loss. People with diabetes should have yearly eyes exams to make sure the backs of their eyes are healthy. Treatment for diabetes requires a multidisciplinary approach.
Macular Degeneration
Macular degeneration is a condition in which the central part of the back of the eye loses blood circulation. As a result, there is a breakdown of retinal pigment epithelium cells in the macular region. As the disease progresses, central vision diminishes. We provide specialized tests to evaluate your personal risks. We also provide health and nutritional counseling to reduce this risk. In advanced cases, specialized surgery may be needed to treat macular degeneration.
Keratoconus
Keratoconus is a disorder that occurs when the cornea, which is typically rounded, becomes cone shaped. The progression is usually slow and can stop at any stage from mild to severe. This distortion increases as the cornea bulges and thins. The apex of the cornea often scars, reducing the vision. Treatment of keratoconus is most effective with specialty contact lenses designed specifically for the irregular corneal surface. If contact lens treatment is not successful, a surgical corneal transplant may be necessary.

All the employees are kind and very punctual. I've never had to wait more than a few minutes before I'm called back.

There is currently no cure or treatment for dry AMD, but you can take steps to reduce your risk of developing wet AMD. These include healthy lifestyle choices (like not smoking) and taking AREDS2 vitamins daily if recommended by your doctor. It's also important to monitor your eyes with at-home testing between office visits.
There is an advanced home monitoring technology available that is sensitive to changes in AMD. The ForeseeHome AMD Monitoring Program is an easy-to-use early warning system for your eyes that can catch the progression from dry to wet AMD as soon as it happens, which lets your doctor step in sooner and determine the appropriate course of action. People preserved more of their vision when wet AMD was detected using ForeseeHome between office visits, in addition to your doctor's standard of care. ForeseeHome is FDA-cleared and covered by Medicare.
I started seeing Dr. Burrell back in 2000 when she was starting her practice. I have had significant eye problems since I was a child, so it was great to have a doctor who was able to understand all my issues. In 2015 I had cataract surgery in both eyes and Dr. Burrell was outstanding. Those surgeries were life changing. In recent years I have also seen Dr. Van Meter and been very pleased with him as well. I experienced nothing but professionalism and kindness in my 24 years of visiting this office and have referred several of my friends there.
